The primary mission of the Office of Multicultural Student Services (OMSS) is to improve the retention and graduation of underrepresented students by promoting their academic and personal growth. The office provides supplementary services in the areas of academic advising, subject tutoring, leadership development, the sponsorship of cultural events, and pre-college programs. Through these services and programs, students develop academic discipline and other important qualities that will enhance their development at UW-La Crosse. OMSS supports collaborative efforts that promote human understanding, shared values, and respect or individual differences and similarities.
Under the leadership of the Assistant Director for Retention in OMSS, the Transfer Retention Specialist will assist with monitoring the early alert system for transfer students and provide proactive outreach to other specific student groups in the office. In partnership with the Assistant Director for Retention, this position responds to students' academic needs through coaching and referral to appropriate campus resources. The specialist will also work collaboratively with academic departments to implement proactive interventions for specific transfer student populations who do not meet established benchmarks, such as credits earned, declared major, grade point average (g.p.a.), financial aid, math placement, or timely degree completion.
